The closure 3, Fig. 1, of a pressure vessel 1, with a seal 7 between the closure and a liner 2, is held in place by a hollow cylindrical body 4 having an external helical groove 10 of arcuate section opposed to a complementary helical groove 9 on the inside of the mouth of the vessel so that the cylinder 4 is locked in position by at least one length of coil springs 13, Fig. 2, which is contained in the helical way formed by the alignment of the grooves 9, 10. The wire of the coil 13 is of generally square section, Fig. 3 (not shown), and there are curved inserts 15 in the ends of the coil which help to retain the coil in whichever of the grooves 9, 10 it is placed before the cylinder 4 is screwed into the mouth 1 of the vessel. The resilience of the spring retains the coil 13 in the groove 9 but if it is first inserted in the groove 10 the inserts 15 are fastened therein. The grooves 9, 10 may be shaped in section to correspond in one part to the shape of the coil 13 at its load-bearing surfaces when loaded and to give a clearance at the non load-bearing parts between the coil and groove surface. |
