A switched telecommunications network includes a plurality of switching means (49) for switching different types of traffic, such as audio data, including voice data, fax and modem originating data, digital computer originating data and video data. A communications link (50) connects a user's site to the network, and bandwidth managing means (46) are provided to multiplexed traffic of different types for transmission over the link. After transmission over the link (50), a complementary bandwith manager (51) is arranged to de-multiplex the traffic for application to the respective switching means (49). The bandwidth manager (46) is arranged dynamically to allocate bandwidth to the different types of traffic, thereby optimising the available bandwidth provided by the communications link (50). |
