PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an atmospheric gas generator by which a denatured gas to be used in heat treatment of steel can be economically and favorably manufactured without waste of the cost. SOLUTION: Relating to an atmospheric gas generator having a gas denaturation furnace 10 in which a catalyst pipe 12 is passed inside, a heating burner 13 to heat the catalyst pipe 12 is arranged, and a denatured gas is manufactured out of the mixture gas of raw gas fed to the catalyst pipe 12 and air, a mixed gas feed passage 21 to feed the mixture gas to the catalyst pipe 12, and a modified gas feed passage 41 to feed the denatured gas from the catalyst pipe 12 to a heat treatment furnace 51 of steel, a burner 13a to burn the denatured gas is provided on the gas modification furnace 10, the heating burner 13a for denatured gas is connected to the modified gas feed passage 41 through a circulation passage 61, a pressure gauge 43 to detect whether or not the modified gas in the denatured gas feed passage 41 is arranged, and a safety valve 62 to guide the excess gas in the denatured gas feed passage 41 to the heating burner 13a for modified gas when the excess of the denatured gas is detected by the pressure gauge 43 is provided on the circulation passage 61.
