PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce turbo-lag while smoke increase in exhaust gas is suppressed to the utmost by the improvement of a burning state when the operating condition is shifted from a steady operating condition to an accelerated operating condition, in a diesel engine which is provided with a turbo-supercharger driven by exhaust gas flow and in which an air-fuel ratio A/F of a combustion chamber is indirectly controlled by adjusting the quantity of exhaust gas recirculation. SOLUTION: When the engine is shifted from a steady operating condition to an accelerated operating condition, the quantity of exhaust recirculation is reduced with increase of the quantity of fuel injection, and the fuel injection by an injector is performed in two stages, that is, in an early time injection at a BTDC 90 deg. CA and a later time injection at the neighborhood of a TDC. Then, the later injection timing is retarded from a main injection timing at the neighborhood of a TDC in the steady operating condition immediately before the engine is shifted to the accelerated operating condition. The early time injection can be performed in further two separated stages.
