PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject safe new compound having excellent matrix metalloprotease(MMP) inhibitory action and its sustainability, and useful as a preventive/therapeutic agent for arthrosis deformans, chronic arthrorheumatism osteoporosis, cancer, periodontosis, corneal ulcer, and the like. SOLUTION: This new compound is a compound of formula I [rings A and B are each a (substituted) homocyclic or heterocyclic ring; R1 is H, a (substituted) hydrocarbon group, acyl or the like; X1 is a lone pair, (substituted) bivalent 1-3C aliphatic hydrocarbon group or the like; X2 is a lone pair, (substituted) bivalent 1-3C aliphatic hydrocarbon group or the like; Y is H, a (substituted) hydrocarbon group, halogen, carboxyl, an acyl or the like; m is 0 or 1; n is 1-3; q1 is 1 to 2n+4; q2 is 0 to 2n+3], e.g. 3-mercapto-1-(4- phenoxybenzyl)pyrrolidine-2,5-dione. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by reaction between a compound of formula II (L is an eliminable group) or formula III and a compound of the formula: R1SH.
