PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound by incorporating an amine compound having two or more amino groups in the molecule with a specific quantity of water, and with formaldehyde under a specific hydrogen pressure and temperature in the presence of a precious metal-based catalyst containing Pd, Pt or the like. SOLUTION: This method incorporates, in the presence of (A) a precious metal-based catalyst (e.g. Pd/C catalyst) containing at least one type of precious metal selected from the group consisting of Pd, Pt, Rh and Ru, preferably at 0.1 to 20 wt.% as the precious metal, (B) an amine compound having 2 or more amino groups in the molecule, e.g. ethylenediamine and piperazine, with (C) 0.2 to 5 times by weight of water, and then with (D) formaldehyde at a hydrogen pressure of 1 MPa (gauge) or more and reaction temperature of 60 to 200 deg.C. It is preferable for the above reactions to add 2 to 2000 ppm (as the precious metal) of the component A to the component B, and use one mole of the component (D) per one mole of the active hydrogen group in the amino group of the component B. |
