PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain N-(1,1-dimethyl-3-oxobutyl)acrylamide in a high yield by reacting acetone or the like with acrylonitrile and sulfuric acid, hydrolyzing the obtained product, contacting an organic layer in crude N- dimethyloxobutylacrylamide obtained by neutralization with a gas containing molecular oxygen, hydrolyzing the obtained product in the presence of an alkaline aqueous solution, removing concomitant acrylamide, neutralizing the resultant mixture, followed by distilling the obtained mixture in vacuo. SOLUTION: This compound is obtained by reacting (A) acetone or diacetone alcohol with acrylonitrile and sulfuric acid, hydrolyzing an organic layer obtained by removing (C) low-boiling-point ingredients (e.g. mesityl oxide) contained in (B) crude N-(1,1-dimethyl-3-oxobutyl)acrylamide obtained by hydrolysis and neutralization in the presence of (D) an alkaline aqueous solution (e.g. sodium hydroxide) preferably at 50-70 deg.C with contacting with a gas containing molecular oxygen at a rate of 30 L/h.L or higher, removing concomitant (E) acrylamide, neutralizing the resultant mixture, followed by distilling the obtained mixture in vacuo.
