A variable-speed ratchet gear for industrial machines or vehicles comprises a series of thrust bars 32 carried in recesses 31 in an output shaft 27 which bars are sequentially wedged between teeth 40 on the output shaft and a sleeve 11, which on rotation of an input shaft 1 is moved bodily along a circular path without rotation about its own axis, to transmit movement therebetween. The sleeve 11 is freely mounted in an eccentric recess 10 in a drum 9 which in turn is mounted in an eccentric recess 8 in a drum 7 fast with the input shaft 1. The radius of the circular path on which the sleeve 11 moves and hence the gear ratio is varied by relative rotation between the drums 7, 9. For ratio shift a hand wheel 47 is rotated to move axially a nut 50 which acts through a bell-crank 53 to move axially a sleeve 60 and shift rods 63 fast therewith. The shift rods 63 are axially slidable in grooves 64 in the outer drum 7 and have teeth 65 which engage helical grooves 66 in the drum 9 whereby axial movement of the rods 63 causes relative rotation between the drums. The sleeve 11 is connected through an Oldham coupling 26 to a sleeve 14 which is rotatably mounted in a casing 3 and is prevented from rotation by a screw 17. Springs 42 maintain contact between the thrust bars 32 and the teeth 40 when the bars are not in the wedging position. Each tooth 40 engages a notch in a slide 36 carried by the corresponding thrust bar 32, which slides accommodate for positional changes in the point of contact between the teeth 40 and bars 32. The screw 17 may be released to permit the device to operate as a differential gear. |
