A machine for applying a succession of tearstrips to a web of wrapping material comprises a vertically reciprocating cutter 15 for transversely severing the projecting portion 13 of a web of tear-strip intermittently fed between guides 10, 11, a stationary channel-shaped support 18 for receiving each cut strip with its end 14 projecting beyond the support, a rotary suction drum 21 rotatable about an axis 21<SP>1</SP> at right angles to the length of the tear strip and adapted to receive the projecting end 14 tangentially to draw the strip around the drum, the strip on the drum 21 being secured to a web 30 of continuously-fed wrapping material by means of a drum 29 and electric heat-sealer 32. Suction holes 16, 19 in the cutter 15 and support 18 respectively secure the strip during cutting and transport and while held on the support 18 prior to transfer to the drum 21.
