The sheets are placed a support in the machine arranged with respect to sampling system. The plate is movable with respect to a fixed support carrying the sampling system. A receiver/transmitter system (43,44) is fitted between the plate (14) and the fixed support (13). The signal produced by the receiver is processed to produce data relative to the position of the plate with respect to the fixed support. A prescribed formula is used which establishes the relation between the data and at least the thickness of a sheet or pile of sheets (16) present on the plate from which the thickness is deduced and then displayed or transmitted.
