In the X-ray tube production, getter material is transferred from a cathode to the tube interior surface by supplying energy to the cathode. An x-ray tube with a surface getter is produced by placing a getter material-loaded cathode within the tube, producing a vacuum within the sealed tube and transferring the getter material to a surface region of the tube interior by energy supply to the cathode. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) an x-ray tube cathode for use in the above process; and (ii) an x-ray tube produced by the above process. Preferred Features: The getter material consists of Mg, Ba, Al, Ti, Zr, V, aluminum carbide, vanadium carbide or Al-Zr alloy and is applied to the cathode by PVD or CVD.
