Self-exciting high frequency converter for various gas discharge lamps consists of a full wave rectifier, a half bridge inverter, a smoothing capacitor, a charging inductor, a control unit and a load network. The inverter is provided with input terminals, two switching elements, two diodes, two capacitors, two reverse diodes and a discharging diode. The capacitors are connected in series, wherein the first capacitor is connected with the first reverse diode and the second capacitor is connected with the second reverse diode, the first capacitor and the anode lead of the first reverse diode is connected to the inverter negative DC input terminal, the second capacitor is connected to the inverter positive DC input terminal via said discharging diode, the anode lead of the first reverse diode is connected to the first capacitor, the anode lead of the second reverse diode is connected to a common point situated between the first and second capacitor, and one of the inverter AC output terminals and the cathode lead of the second reverse diode are connected to the inverter positive DC input terminal.
