The device has at least one analog sensor (2,4) to produce an analog signal and at least one incremental sensor (7,8) outputs a pulse train signal as a function of the path to be measured. The analog and the pulse train signals can be set in relation to each other. Preferably there are two of each kind of sensor. The analog sensors may be Hall elements that co-operate with rod magnets (3,5). The incremental sensors may be Hall-circuits that co-operate with a row of alternating magnet poles (10).
