The knitted fabric incorporates rubber yarns, knitted in at the upper surface, so that the peripheral surfaces of the rubber yarns are at least partially free at the fabric surface. The knitted fabric can be in two layers, with the rubber yarns knitted into the rear surface of the rear layer as tucks or with a partial float, and knitted at least partially into the front layer. The rubber yarn is knitted in by a Jacquard process, so that it mainly floats at the rear layer, and is knitted into the front layer. Or it is knitted in with an intarsia technique, at specific zones at the front side of the fabric. The rubber yarn has an elasticity of /-30%. The stretch yarn has a multifilament structure, or it is of plastics filaments with rubber wound round them. The stretch yarns are coated with a layer which absorbs ultra violet light. The stretch yarn can be cladded with wound threads in the same color as the basic fabric color. At least one stretch yarn is at the leading and/or trailing knitted layer at zones where the seat cover is subjected to most mechanical wear.
