Polyvinyl chloride is chlorinated to give a polymer of density of not more than 1.55, from which fibres are spun (see Division B5). In an example, mixtures of polyvinyl chloride (AFNOR viscosity index 141) (1,000g.), hydrochloric acid (4,000 g.), chloroform (750 c.c.), Cemulsol L40 (75 c.c.) and water (3,440 c.c.) are chlorinated under the action of actinic light for 45 and 60 minutes at 40 DEG C. The chlorinated products have density 1.50 (mean chlorine content 63.2%) and density 1.53 (mean chlorine content 67.8%) respectively.
