The sharpening mechanism moves between an operative and inoperative position and has a blade restraint mechanism which prevents the blade from moving out of a rest position. A locking device (38) moves in relation to the blade restraint device between a locking position where the restraint device is operative and an unlocking position where the restraint device is inoperative to prevent the blade from moving outwards. A release device (10) can be operated to allow the locking device to move from the locked to unlocked position before returning automatically to locking position. The sharpening mechanism can be mounted inside a hollow housing (1) near the front end whilst the operator to trigger the release device is near the rear end.
