Process for removing carbon dioxide from waste gas comprises feeding a gas stream containing carbon dioxide and nitrogen through a liquid catalyst of 0.5 wt.% nitric acid, 1.5 wt.% sulfuric acid and/or phosphoric acid and 98.5 wt.% water at 20-100, preferably 85-95 deg C, and feeding the reaction gas stream leaving the catalyst at 20-88, preferably 80-84 deg C through a water bath arranged over the catalyst and then through a further water bath at up to 60, preferably 20-25 deg C. An Independent claim is also included for the apparatus for carrying out the process comprising a reactor with its upper part connected to a water bath.
