A liquid pig iron and/or crude steel production process comprises compaction of carbon fines to form a plasticized material which is extruded into a smelter-gasifier. Liquid pig iron and/or crude steel is produced from iron-containing material in a smelter-gasifier by smelting the iron-containing material in a stationary carbon source bed supplied with carbonaceous material and oxygen-containing gas with simultaneous reducing gas formation. Fine material formed from fine carbon source particles, optionally together with fine smelting residue particles, fine ore, fine plastic particles and/or additives are compacted for frictional and compression heat generation, to produce a (partially) plasticized material which is extruded into the smelter-gasifier. An Independent claim is also included for an installation for carrying out the above process.
