The invention relates to an electric motor which can be switched such that it functions as both starter motor and generator of an internal combustion engine, notably of a motor vehicle. A two-step planetary gear system is provided for for coupling the motor to the shaft (4) of the internal combustion engine, a brake unit being assigned to each step for blocking a rotating movement of said step.
