Sample collection of oil from contaminated water surfaces, using an oleophilic web material attached to a float

A process for collecting samples of oil, for analysis, etc, from water polluted by oil, in which a device comprising a web of hydrophobic/oleophilic material is placed in contact with the contaminated water to be sampled. The web may typically be composed of fibrillated polyolefin or woven metal wire. Device comprises a generally rectangular flexible web of oleophilic fabric attached to a tubular float and to a holding/towing cord. Out of use the fabric web can be rolled around the float for compact storage.
