A writing instrument reliable in operation and simple in construction, having a mechanism for controlling the feeding of ink by air sealed in an ink passage; and a method of producing the same. The writing instrument comprises a shut-off chamber (11) having air sealed therein to shut off ink, an ink holding passage (18) communicating with the shut-off chamber, the latter having a porous relay body (15) inserted therein, an ink reservoir (17) formed in the root of the relay body, the arrangement being such that when the ink in the ink reservoir is consumed, the ink in the ink holding passage (18) flows down to contact the relay body (15) and into the ink reservoir, preventing air from being sucked into the porous relay body (15).
