To be able mechanically to design an technical installation consisting of components, the parameters needed for the operation of each component is imaged on data blocks (DSi) by means of which measuring and/or control processes (MSPi) are drawn up. Suitable components for implementing each measurement and/or control process (MSPi) are selected and interlinked as part of a flow chart (APi). An automation structure (AS) is determined on the basis of the knowledge relevant to the technical installation and allocated to each flow chart (APi) of the automation structure (AS) to produce the control system.
