An undersea hydraulic coupling comprises a male member 10 having a cylindrical section 44, frustra-conical section 45, and a bore 32 with a valve 62 inside the bore for controlling fluid flow through it. A female member 20 has a receiving chamber for insertion of the male member, where the receiving chamber also has a frustra-conical section 37, and at least one internal shoulder surface 77. At least one radial seal 28 is positioned on the internal shoulder surface, to engage the frustra-conical section of the male member body and the frustra conical section of the receving chamber upon insertion of the male member into the receiving chamber. A seal retainer is located inside the receiving chamber for holding the radial seal against the internal shoulder when the coupling members are separated. The retainer may comprise a retainer sleeve 53 held in place by a threaded retainer 51. The radial seal may be positioned inside the receiving chamber to seal with the frustra-conical surface of the male member body after seawater is expelled from the space between the female member and the frustra-conical surface of the male member. The female member may also have a stepped internal bore with a plurality of shoulder surfaces, where a portion of the stepped bore is tapered to correspond to the tapered outer surface of the male member. |
