1,046,627. Talking dolls. A. J. P. VAN DEN HURK and W. HILLER. Sept. 25, 1963 [Oct. 2, 1962; June 5, 1963], No. 37678/63. Heading G5R. Sound reproduction apparatus for a doll or the like comprises a sound carrier having a pick-up guided in its sound grooves, one or the other being secured to the doll and the other being displaceably mounted so that tilting in one direction causes the pick-up to be guided in a sound groove. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, the pick-up 2 is mounted on an arm 3 secured by a bolt 3a in a slot 5 so that when the body 4 is tilted in one direction the pick-up engages the record 1, and when the body is tilted in the opposite direction the pick-up is disengaged from the record. In another arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the pick-up is fixed and a record is arranged along an arc of a circle and pivoted at its centre; a weight on one end of the record causes the record to rotate when tilted. In Fig. 3 a carriage 10 is slidable along a pair of guide rails 6 mounted above a flat record. The pick-up 2 is pivoted at 7 to the carriage and at its upper end carries a weight 8 so that tilting in one direction causes engagement of the pick-up and tilting in the opposite direction causes disengagement; stops 9 limit the rotation. The record may be in the form of a replaceable foil or may be formed in part of the doll, Fig. 5 (not shown). The sound track may comprise two parallel grooves joined at their ends by semicircular guide grooves so that the pick-up need not be disengaged from the record, Fig. 4 (not shown). The record may be in the form of a hemispherical shell or a rectangular segment thereof, Fig. 6. On its inner surface the shell is provided with U-shaped recesses forming guide tracks 1a, 1b provided with sound grooves in their bottom surfaces. The guide tracks are provided with inlets 14 from recesses 15 which guide the pick-up from a track la in one direction to a track 1b in the opposite direction and vice versa. The pick-up arm (not shown) is attached to an axle 20, Fig. 12, which also carries an arm 17 carrying a non-return pawl 18 engaging teeth at the side of the record to prevent reverse movement of the pick-up arm. The arm 17 carries an adjustable weight 17a for regulating the pick-up movement, and braking means may be coupled to the axle 20, Fig. 9 (not shown). |
