PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely control a suction air quantity of a cylinder by an air intake valve. SOLUTION: A variable valve system engine furnished with air intake and exhaust valves is furnished with an air quantity control means to control suction air quantity of a cylinder 2 in accordance with closing timing of the air intake valve 3, and the air quantity control means has a decision means to decide to close the air intake valve 3 in an air intake process or to close it in a compression process in accordance with a driving condition of the engine, a closing time setting means to set closing timing of the air intake valve 3 in the air intake process and closing timing of the air intake valve 3 in the compression process in accordance with the driving condition of the engine and a closing control means to close the air intake valve 3 at pertinent time in accordance with a decision.
