PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method that can safely and efficiently treat the surface of carbon fibers, particularly surface-treating continuously the carbon fiber bundle running in an ozone atmosphere and an apparatus therefor. SOLUTION: When the carbon fibers are surface-treated with heat in a gas atmosphere, at least two temperature zones can be provided after the carbon fibers pass through the sealing zone, and they are passed through the treating chambers into which the gas containing ozone, an oxidative gas, is introduced for supplying the ozone consumed by reactions and thermal decomposition in the running direction of the carbon fibers whereby the carbon fibers are effectively oxidation-treated on their surfaces and then passed through the sealing zone without exhaustion of unreacting ozone outside the treatment system. |
