A variable resistance rectifier is used to form a galvanic connection between the object needing protection and a second object nearby. A method for cathodically protecting objects against corrosion, comprises providing an anode (5) in the object (1) needing protection, and using a rectifier to form a galvanic connection between this object and a second object nearby. The resistance of the rectifier is variable, enabling it to be controlled on the basis of the potential measured between the object being protected and the area around it. An Independent claim is also included for the cathodic protection apparatus.
