PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the subject new compound capable of being efficiently produced without passing through especially complicated purification processes, capable of being approximately quantitatively formed under mild conditions without accompanying especial side reactions and useful as an intermediate for synthesizing a carcinogen, etc. SOLUTION: A compound of formula (R is H, a halogen, a lower alkyl or the like), for example, 2-amino-3-(N'-benzoyl-N-methylthioureido)-5-phenylpyridine. The compound is obtained by reacting (A) 2-amino-3-methylamino-5- phenylpyridine with (B) benzoyl isothiocyanate or a benzoyl isothiocyanate derivative having a substituent on the benzoyl group, subjecting the obtained reaction product to intermolecular desulfurizing cyclization in the presence of mercury oxide, lead oxide, etc., and hydrolyzing the formed cyclization product under an acidic or basic condition.
