PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for purifying a vinyl type monomer for removing/reducing a mercaptan-based compound from a vinyl type monomer containing a minute amount of a mercaptan-based compound as an impurity by simple waste liquor treatment, etc., without a problem of polymerization. SOLUTION: This method for purifying a vinyl type monomer comprises a process for bringing a mercaptan-based compound-containing vinyl type monomer in a vapor-phase state into contact with molecular oxygen in the presence of an N-oxyl compound of the formula (R1 to R4 are each an alkyl group; R5 is H, OH, OR, OCOR, NHCOR or O-[(EO)n+(PO)m]-H; R6 is H or R5 and R6 are bonded to form =O; R is an alkyl group, an alkenyl group or an aryl group; EO is an ethyleneoxy group; PO is a propyleneoxy group).
