PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an adhesive composition having excellent adhesive strength and storage stability by polymerizing a chloroprene monomer with anα,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid in the presence of ascorbic acid or the like. SOLUTION: A chloroprene monomer (100 pts.wt.), 0.5-10 pts.wt.α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid selected from among acrylic acid, maleic acid, etc., and a chain transfer agent such as n-dodecyl mercaptan are added to an aqueous solution containing 1-10 pts.wt. dispersant or emulsifier such as an alkylphenylsulfonate, and 0.01-0.5 pt.wt. reducing compound (e.g. ascorbic acid) represented by the formula (wherein R is hydrogen, a 1-4C alkyl, or the like) and an initiator such as potassium persulfate are added to the mixture. The resultant mixture is reacted under heating. A chloroprene copolymer latex (100 pts.wt. in terms of the solid content) obtained at the final conversion of at least 80% and having a solid content concentration of 40-65 wt.% is mixed with 20-70 pts.wt. tackifying resin such as a modified rosin, 0.5-10 pts.wt. metal oxide such as zinc oxide, and 0.5-10 pts.wt. curing agent to obtain an adhesive.
