PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain both a copolymer latex capable of remarkably improving surface strength and blister resistance of a coated paper, excellent in white paper gloss and printing gloss, improved in mechanical stability and stickiness preventing properties, excellent in coating operation efficiency and suitable for coating a paper, especially coating of a printing paper for high-speed rotary offset printing and a composition for coating the paper using the copolymer latex. SOLUTION: This composition for coating a paper is obtained by carrying out an emulsion polymerization of (a) 10-80 pts.wt. of a conjugated diene-based monomer, (b) 0.5-15 pts.wt. of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer and (c) 5-89.5 pts.wt. of other monomers copolymerizable with the monomers (a) and (b) [in which the total amount of the monomers (a), (b) and (c) is 100 pts.wt.] in an aqueous medium and has >=80 wt.% toluene-insoluble content. The composition for coating the paper uses the copolymer latex.
