PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save energy by stopping the rotational driving of a power motor by judging the time when a punch press is not in automatic operation. SOLUTION: In the punch press, by hitting a punch with a crank-shaft which is rotationally driven with a press motor 33 as a press driving means or a ram through a hydraulic cylinder which is freely vertically movable, a work is punched in cooperation of the punch with a die. Whether the punch press is automatically operated is judged with a controller (CNC 17) for controlling the punch press and, when the press is not in automatic operation, driving of the power driving means such as the press motor 33 or a hydraulic motor 71 as a hydraulical driving means for supply pressure oil to the hydraulic cylinder is stopped. By stopping driving of the power driving means except the time in automatic operation, the energy is saved and noise caused by the power driving means is reduced.
