PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a combustion control device of a lean combustion internal combustion engine capable of restraining occurrence of lean frame-out at the time of decelerating the engine while restraining generation of shock caused by a sudden change of an engine combustion state to the utmost at the time of practicing rich spike treatment. SOLUTION: A combustion state of an engine 10 is changed over among 'stratified combustion', 'weak stratified combustion', 'homogeneous lean combustion', 'homogeneous stoichiometric combustion' and 'homogeneous rich combustion'. An electronic control device 60 changes the combustion state from 'stratified combustion' and 'weak stratified combustion' to 'homogeneous rich combustion' by practicing rich spike treatment once through 'homogeneous lean combustion'. A change-over condition of the combustion state is changed so as to directly change over it between 'weak stratified combustion' and 'homogenous rich combustion' by suspending the rich spike treatment and prohibiting changing over of the combustion state to 'homogeneous lean combustion' at the time of decelerating the engine when fuel injection quantity becomes smaller than specified quantity.
