摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an element which is sharpened at the edge with the accuracy of atomic scale by forming an end face, cut vertically with respect to the layer direction of a carbon hexagonal net faces of a graphite block, a carbon rod, a carbon film or carbon fiber as an electron emission face. SOLUTION: A carbon rod formed through extrusion molding is a micro- carbon rod of 20-100 μm diameter. In the carbon rod, carbon hexagonal net faces 62 are arranged preferentially in the axial direction of the rod, and the cylindrical surface of the carbon rod is the carbon hexagonal net surface 62. A face cut vertically with respect to the axial direction of the rod is an edge surface 63. The carbon rod is cut vertically to the axial direction of the rod at specified dimensional spaces to produce carbon rod chips. When the area of the edge face 63 is larger than the electron emission face to be obtained, the edge face 63 is cut for manufacture an emitter element 67. The emitter element 67 is fixed, with an adhesive 66 onto an insulating board 65 with a cathode electrode 64 of conductive material applied thereto. Since the edge face 63 substantially formed of a unidimensional atomic arrangement is used as the electron emission face, electron emission effect is superior, and an emitter is manufactured in a simple process.
