摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain excellent display quality in a liquid crystal display device by solving problems concerning alignment property due to size of a pretilt angle. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device comprises a pair of substrates 1, 2, a nematic liquid crystal layer 9 held between the pair of substrates, alignment controlling layers 7, 8 provided on the inside of respective substrates having slopes with a specified angle with respect to the substrates with tooth- shaped cross sections and alignment layers 5, 6 covering the alignment controlling layers. The alignment layers are homogeneous alignment layers, and in the case an inclined angle of the slopes of the alignment controlling layers 7, 8 with respect to a surface of the substrate is expressed asα, and a pretilt angle of a liquid crystal with respect to the alignment layers is expressed asθp, a pretilt angleθof the liquid crystal with respect to the surface of the substrate is optionally expressed asθ=θp+α.
