PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal composition, having a high responding property and/or an excellent hysteresis characteristic (a low threshold electric voltage and a high driving margin) of a liquid crystal composition having an anti-ferroelectric phase. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition having a chiral smectic CA* phase is obtained by selecting and mixing liquid crystal compounds having a same direction of a light axis tilt (tilt sense) caused by an impress of an electric field, and/or mixing liquid crystal compounds having different conformations (conformational sense) of three atoms (atomic groups) other than a core bonded with an asymmetric carbon in the molecule of the liquid crystal compound, i.e., mixing a compound having the atoms arranged clockwise in an order of having a longer length (in the case of having a same length, an order of having a larger volume) with a compound arranged counterclockwise. |
