PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress deposition of metal atoms encapsulated in a cell onto the inner wall of a side plate by forming a tubular light absorbing cell encapsulating a metal atom gas having an absorption line at a specific optical frequency such that the temperature is kept higher at the tube end part than in the central part. SOLUTION: A tubular light absorbing cell 6 encapsulating a metal atom gas having an absorption line at a specific optical frequency is held by three independent heat conducting members 30a, 30b, 30c. These heat conducting members 30a-30c are bonded to a base 32 through three independent temperature regulating means 31a-31c. Temperature of two heat conducting members 30a, 30c is set higher than that of the heat conducting member 30b and heat generation of the temperature regulating means 31a-31c is controlled such that the difference between the temperature measured by the temperature measuring means embedded in each heat conducting member 30a-30c and the set temperature will be 0 thus keeping the temperature of the side plate at a higher level constantly as compared with the temperature in the central part of the tubular light absorbing cell 6.
