PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focusing device capable of realizing a rapid and accurate automatic focusing function and an image pickup device provided with the same. SOLUTION: A pupil dividing means time sequentially dividing the photographing luminous flux of a photographing optical system into at least two areas is provided with a pupil plate 2 having two holes 2a and 2b provided in a symmetrical state centering the optical axis of the photographing optical system, a light shielding means 4 capable of selectively shielding either one of the two holes, and a light shielding signal generating means starting light shielding by means of the means 4 with respect to the other hole which is not in a light shielding condition. A switching starting signal by the light shielding signal generating means can be generated earlier than the finish of photoelectric conversion to an optical image from the one hole. |
