PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture a high performance liquid crystal display having a number of scanning lines, being able to fulfil requirements of low voltage driving, a wide temperature range quick response. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical element utilizes a liquid crystal composition having at least two domains with respective different electrooptical characteristics. V1>0 holds with respect to an applied voltage V1 for minimum transmissivity in electrooptical response in a domain 1 and V2<0 holds with respect to an applied voltage V2 for minimum trnasmissivity in a domain 2. Furthermore, shapes of voltage-transmissivity curves of the domain 1 and the domain 2 are mutually almost symmetrical with an axis of symmetry at 0 applied voltage. Besides in the case the domain 1 and the domain 2 coexist in the same pixel, the electrooptical characteristic of the pixel is an intermediate one between these characteristics of the domain 1 and the domain 2. Consequently if 0<A1/(A1+A2)<1 holds, assuming areas of the domain 1 and the domain 2 in a pixel as A1 and A2 respectively, a V-shaped characteristic curve is exhibited.
