PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject triazoles useful for plastics, etc., by which separation and purification are readily carried out and yield and productivity are high without causing side reactions by using specific oxides as a starting raw material in the presence of an acidic substance. SOLUTION: The objective triazoles represented by formula I [R1 is H, Cl, carboxyl or the like; 2 is H, Cl, a lower alkyl or the like; R3 is H, Cl, a (substituted)phenyl or the like; R4 is H, Cl, hydroxyl or the like; R5 is H, a 1-12C alkyl or the like] are produced by reducing 2-phenylbenzotrizole N-oxides represented by formula II in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst in at least one kind of solvent selected from the group consisting of water and organic solvents with hydrogen at 0-300 deg.C reactional temperature under a pressure of atmospheric pressure to 50 kg/cm2 under acidic conditions. A catalyst prepared by supporting 0.1-5 wt.% of a platinum group element on carbon or alumina, especially a catalyst poisoned with a poisoning agent such as thiourea is preferably used as the catalyst. |
