PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a good image display with a color display device of a translucent half reflection type which display approximately white characters and graphics, etc., with approximately black by forming color patterns in relief in a background to stress the graphics, etc., only when needed. SOLUTION: This color display device has a liquid crystal element 10 of a normally white type, a translucent reflection plate 3, color filters 4 formed with prescribed patterns having different transmission characteristics and a back light 6 including a first light source 8a, second light source 8b and third light source 8c respectively varying in main light emission wavelengths. These color filters 4 have first, second and third patterns 5a, 5b and 5c having the low transmission characteristics respectively corresponding to the respective light sources 8a to 8c. Illumination is normally executed by the third light source 8c. The first patterns 5a or the second patterns 5b is formed in relief in the background of a display surface by lighting the first light source 8a or the second light source 8b when needed, by which the approximately black characters, graphics, etc., are stressed and displayed.
