PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a recording pattern in which the bending of a magnetized transition area at the both edge parts of a track can be reduced, and deleted area is not present by sufficiently reducing the edge part magnetic field of an upper core layer. SOLUTION: This composite thin film magnetic head is provided with a lower core layer 8, upper core layer 10, coil layer for guiding a recording magnetic field to the lower core layer 8 and the upper core layer 10, and magnetic gap layer formed of a non-magnetic thin film interposed between the lower core layer 8 and the upper core layer 10, and the lower core layer 8 is formed so as to be projecting to the upper core layer 10, and the width dimension of the magnetic gap side of the upper core layer 10 is made wider than the width dimension of the magnetic gap side of the lower core layer 8. In this case, an angleθmade by the side face and bottom face of the upper core layer 10 is made larger than 90 deg.. Also, the saturated magnetic flux density of the lower core layer 8 is made larger than that of the upper core layer 10.
