PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance polymerization activity and obtain a polymer having higher molecular weight by adding an ester compound to a polymerization system with a catalyst comprising a metallocene-supported type catalyst as a major component, the molar ratio of the ester compound to a transition metal of the catalyst being in a specific range. SOLUTION: A reaction product obtained by reacting a metallocene compound with aluminoxane in a hydrocarbon solvent is supported on an inorganic or organic porous fine particle carrier having particle diameter of 1-500μm, specific surface area of 50-1,000 m2/g and fine porosity volume of 0.3-2.5 m3/g and an olefin such as propylene is added for preliminary polymerization to prepare an activated metallocene-supported type catalyst. Further the catalyst and an organic aluminium compound are added to a hydrocarbon solvent to form a slurry to which are added an ester compound represented by formula Ra-COO-Rb such as methyl para-toluylate, the molar ratio of the ester compound to a transition metal being in the range of 0.001-50, and a predetermined amount of an olefin to give an olefin polymer wherein Ra and Rb are 1-20C aliphatic hydrocarbons.
