The thermal barrier is used on a flange projecting out from the front portion of a mullion in a curtain wall. The curtain wall comprises horizontal and vertical mullions defining a plurality of subsections, each enclosing a windowpane. This thermal barrier comprises a front section and two side sections transversally projecting from opposite edges of the front section. The front and side sections define a flange-receiving housing. The thermal barrier is shaped and sized so th at a rear edge of at least one side section is in a positive engagement with the fr ont portion of the mullion when the thermal barrier is installed over its flange. Th is thermal barrier replaces the conventional thermal barrier without changing the structural resistance of the curtain wall. It provides an improved thermal insul ation and corner plugs are no longer necessary to fill the spaces between perpendicula r flanges. Smaller amounts of caulking are also required to seal the space created by the expansion joint between two vertical mullions since that space is much smaller than the one left by conventional thermal barriers. The installation of the curtain wall is thus simplified and more rapidly completed. The quality of the w ork is also likely to be more constant. A further advantage is that each thermal bar rier entirely covers the flange so that a windowpane, during its installation in a subsection, is less likely to be damaged since the edges thereof never directly make contact with the hard aluminum interior surface of the flanges.
