PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently superpose illumination beams emitted from two light sources, to make it linear polarization having a single vibration direction and to lead it onto a light valve. SOLUTION: The beam emitted for the light source 1A is led onto the light valve 12 by lens plates 2a, 3A, a cylindrical lens 6A, the lens plate 8 and the cylindrical lens 11. The beam emitted from the light source 1B is led onto the light valve 12 by the lens plates 2B, 3B, the cylindrical lens 6B, the lens plate 8 and the cylindrical lens 11. Although the beams emitted from the light sources 1A, 1B are random polarization, are converted to a linearly polarized light having the single vibrational direction by beam splitter arrays 4A, 4B and 9 and a polarized light separating film 7d of a polarizing beam splitter 7 to be led to the light valve 12.
