PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent accidental fire at the time of stratified combustion by providing an ignition plug so as to be situated within a cavity on a top face of a piston, providing a fuel injection valve injecting fuel into the cavity and providing a projection part on a part around the cavity so as not to prevent air flow from directly passing an ignition part. SOLUTION: A fuel injection valve 7 is arranged on an intake port 1 side and is constituted so that fuel may be injected in a comparatively thin and flat fan shape. A fuel injection is performed at intake stroke in a uniform combustion area in which a high engine output is required and is performed at the latter half of compression stroke in a stratified combustion area. In a piston 5, a recessed cavity 8 is formed on the top face and an ignition plug 6 is disposed so as to be situated at this cavity 8. In this internal combustion engine, projection parts 9a, 9b for preventing air flow flowing into the cavity 8 from directly passing an ignition part at the end of compression stroke are formed on a part around the cavity 8 of the top face of the piston 5 and accidental fire at the time of stratified combustion is prevented.
