PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ester which can be handled without encountering a problem of the malodor of the solvent used by esterifying an alcohol with (meth) acrylic acid in a dehydrating solvent and bringing the reaction product into contact with an inert gas during or after removing the solvent by distillation after the reaction. SOLUTION: The alcohol used is an alcohol of the formula (wherein R1 is a 1-30C hydrocarbon group; R2O is a 2-18C oxyalkylene; and n is 0-300). The amount of the inert gas used is usually above 10 vol.% of the volume of the reactor. As for the timing when the contact with the inert gas is started, it is desirable that the contact is started when the solvent decreases to 1 vol.% of the volume of the reactor or below. As for the conditions of the temperature at which the contact with the inert gas is conducted, desirably, the contact begins when the temperature (the temperature of the reaction solution at normal pressure) of the system is 90-100 deg.C. As for the pressure (vapor pressure) conditions, desirably, the contact is performed at atmospheric pressure. |
