PURPOSE: A playback detecting method for a VCR is developed to provide a convenience to a user by temporarily stop the playback of the VCR when the user leaves temporarily away from the VCR. CONSTITUTION: In a playback detecting method for a VCR, when a playback mode is performed(S2), it is first determined if a signal of a high potential level is input(S4). When the signal of the high potential level is input, a temporary playback stop mode is performed(S4). Next, it is detected if a predetermined time is elapsed(S5). When the predetermined time is elapsed, a playback stop mode is performed(S6). When the signal of the high potential level is not input, the playback mode is stopped(S7).
