PURPOSE: A magnetic tape reader for a bankbook is provided to reduce an error rate generated in reading bankbooks, and to be used for reading all kinds of bankbooks, regardless of the attached location of the magnetic tape. CONSTITUTION: A magnetic reader comprises a body(6) and a magnetic head(10). In a part of the body(6), a bankbook inserting slot(8) to insert a bankbook(2) is formed. The magnetic head(10) mounted so as to be slided on a guide(12) located inside of the bankbook inserting slot(8) reads a magnetic tape(4) of the bankbook(2). When the bankbook(2) is inserted into the bankbook inserting slot(8), the magnetic head(10) is slided left and right by a driving device, in order to read the magnetic tape(4) of the bankbook(2).
