PURPOSE: A shrinking agent for reducing the volume of polystyrene foam is provided which, when contacts with polystyrene foam, is separated from polystyrene completely and simultaneously shrinks, and which is highly stable at working conditions, very weakly toxic, very little inflammable, and easy to be transported and stored. CONSTITUTION: The shrinking agent for reducing the volume of polystyrene foam is prepared by a method characterized by immersing tourmaline in a solution consisting of d-limonene or an ester of a dibasic acid such as dimethyl glutarate, dimethyl adipate and dimethyl succinate or their combinations for 30 minutes - 24 hours, and incorporating thereto ethylene glycol, triethanol amine, and optionally tourmaline powder. The shrinking agent is dispersed or immersed in polystyrene foam to collapse foam membranes of polystyrene foam, separating the solvent with polystyrene to float. Thereby, recycle process becomes easy and expensive facilities are not needed.
